HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Materials Research some 200 scientists conduct in the five sub-institutes "Materials Mechanics", "Materials Physics", "Materials Technology", "Magnesium Innovation Centre MagIC" and "Metallic Biomaterials".

The place of employment is Garching near Munich.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) is operating the German Engineering Materials Science Centre (GEMS), a centre for materials research based on the complementary use of synchrotron radiation and neutrons. Instruments using synchrotron radiation are operated at the HZG outstation at DESY in Hamburg, instruments using neutrons are located at the HZG outstation at the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) in Garching near Munich, the most powerful German neutron source.

In this framework we are looking for a Scientist (Postdoc) (m/f/d) to fill a postdoctoral position at our outstation at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum in Garching near Munich. The position will initially be limited until 01.08.2023 with the option of an extension. The place of employment is Garching.

Your tasks

You will integrate into our team at MLZ and take part in the planning and performance of materials science experiments at our neutron beamlines. You will be in charge of a quenching and deformation dilatometer specifically designed as a sample environment for in-situ neutron scattering experiments for structural characterization of materials (small angle neutron scattering and stress/texture measurements via neutron diffraction). This setup complements similar systems already in use at our synchrotron beamlines in Hamburg (DESY). Your main task will be to operate the dilatometer at the neutron source and to support internal and external users for off-the-beam experiments as well as during beamtimes. You will assist the users in the analysis of the scattering experiments performed in-situ.

Although your focus will be on experiments using neutrons, you will interact strongly with our synchrotron team in order to promote the complementary use of the two types of probes in this materials research subfield and in order to make the best use of the already available expertise.

You will be able to develop your own thematic line in the field of materials science within the framework of our in-house research which spans a variety of systems ranging from lightweight alloys, through intermetallic materials for high temperature applications, to innovative welding methods. Working in this context of a an internationally renowned large scale facility with a very profiled internal research program, you will thus be constantly in contact with state-of-the-art materials science questions and high level scientists.

Your profile

You hold a PhD in Materials Science, Material Science Engineering, Physics or related field. You have a good knowledge of the phase constitution and mechanical properties of materials such as steels or metallic alloys. Experience in materials characterization by scattering methods (X-Rays or Neutrons) is mandatory. Postdoctoral experience related to in-situ scattering experiments / development of sample environments is an asset. Your competence can be asserted from a record of recent publications in international peer-reviewed journals. You have good communication skills, are fluent in English and have a working knowledge of German or will soon acquire it. You integrate easily in a multidisciplinary team and besides long-term thematics are able to dedicate yourself to short-term projects such as organising and performing experiments together with external users.
