Interface-based design of nanostructural metallic alloys require new computational and experimental approaches. Join an international team supported by prestigious UK and EU projects to explore the possibility to design, fabricate and test novel metallic alloys with unprecedented mechanical properties and thermal stability. This post is full time fixed term until 31/3/20.

Main roles and responsibilities

You will develop and contribute to the development of nanostructured metallic alloys. In particular, you will use computational tools to analyse thermal stability of nanostructured alloys, the effect and kinetics of inter-grain and grain boundary diffusion. Your activity will be closely connected to ongoing experimental activities, namely deposition of alloys by sputtering and experimental evaluation of their structure, thermal stability and mechanical properties. 

Requirements to do the role successfully (qualifications, experience, skills from the person specification)

The successful candidate should be highly skilled in at least one of the following research fields: computational thermodynamics, diffusion kinetic simulations, solid-state precipitation modelling, atomistic simulations, transmission electron microscopy, and/or CALPHAD database development. In general, candidates who have performed doctoral research studies in computational materials science with some basic experience in microstructure characterization or, at least, having a high interest in experiments will be a good fit for this position. Applicants are expected to be a very independent researcher with a solid research background in physical metallurgy or solid-state physics. Excellent communication skills in English are expected. A good track record of peer-reviewed journal publication is essential for a successful application. Experience with the CALPHAD approach would strengthen the application.
