Two PhD positions are available in the group of prof. Yaroslav Pavlyukh, Wrocław University of Science and Technology (PWR), in the NCN-funded project

Nonequilibrium electrons coupled with phonons and collective orders.

The goal of this project is to study correlations between electrons, phonons, excitons and other quasiparticles in excited quantum states of matter. Investigation of nonequilibrium phenomena in correlated materials has recently become one of the most active and exciting branches of condensed matter physics.

Tasks

Each PhD candidate will focus on three of the following research objectives:

  • Plasmon-assisted photoemission and Auger effect
  • Nonlinear electron-phonon coupling, IR-field induced superconductivity
  • Polarons and the effect of screening in mono‐layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) upon photo-doping
  • Non-equilibrium excitonic insulators (EI), photo-induced melting of the EI phase
  • Dynamics of Zhang-Rice states

based on the prior works:

  • E. Perfetto, Y. Pavlyukh, and G. Stefanucci, Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 016801 (2022)
  • Y. Pavlyukh, E. Perfetto, D. Karlsson, R. van Leeuwen and G. Stefanucci, Phys. Rev. B 105, 125135 (2022) and Phys. Rev. B 105, 125134 (2022)
  • Y. Pavlyukh, E. Perfetto, and G. Stefanucci, Phys. Rev. B 104, 035124 (2021)
  • D. Karlsson, R. van Leeuwen, Y. Pavlyukh, E. Perfetto, and G. Stefanucci, Phys. Rev. Lett. 127 036402 (2021)
  • K. Gillmeister, D. Golež, C.-T. Chiang, N. Bittner, Y. Pavlyukh, J. Berakdar, P. Werner, W. Widdra, Nature Commun. 11, 2095 (2020)
  • A. Marini and Y. Pavlyukh, Phys. Rev. B 98, 075105 (2018)
  • M. Schüler, J. Berakdar and Y. Pavlyukh Phys. Rev. B. 93, 054303 (2016)

First position is focused on analytic model and method development, and first principles calculations. Second position is focused on program development and first principles calculations.

We offer

  • A full-time gross salary of 5000 PLN
  • Additional funds are allocated to cover participation in international conferences (1-2 per year) and visits to international partners
  • Possibility to upgrade the salary by joining the doctoral school at PWR (https://szd.pwr.edu.pl/en/)
  • Access to the Wrocław Center for Networking and Supercomputing, as well as extensive campus services

Essential requirements

We welcome candidates with a Master’s degree in theoretical or computational physics, computer science, chemistry or materials science. The successful candidates should have a strong interest in theoretical physics and programming. Previous experience with field-theoretical, Green's functions, or electronic structure theory methods, as well as basic knowledge of computer programming is a plus.

How to apply

We hope that the new candidates can join us as soon as possible, with 1 September 2022 as the earliest possibility.

Applications as single pdf-document, including: cover and motivation letter, CV, contact details of two referees, academic transcripts and (link to) Master thesis, please send to prof. dr. Yaroslav Pavlyukh:
