Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Research Topic

The Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences has two open PhD positions in the area of relativistic electronic structure theory. The PhD fellows will have her/his main work area in the development and implementation of quantum-chemical methods, and/or the application of quantum-chemical methods to problems in biology, chemistry or materials science. The work will consist of developing and implementing relativistic methods (1-, 2- and 4-component) at the Density Functional level of Theory either based on the use of multiwavelets or the use of Gaussian-type orbitals. Particular focus on the developments of relativistic methods for solids and/or spectroscopic properties. The deadline for application is May 31 2020, and the application can be made online at https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/185730/phd-fellow-in-theoretical-chemistry, where also more details about the application can be found.

The position

The position is affiliated with the Department of Chemistry at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences. The Hylleraas Centre is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence, established by the Research Council of Norway in 2017 for a period of 10 years. About 50 scientists, post-doctoral fellows and PhD students in the field of theoretical and computational chemistry are active at the centre.

As a student, you will enter an international and collegial environment, and be enrolled in the Department of Chemistry PhD school.

The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year, and consists of teaching or other duties for the department. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

Qualifications

The applicant must document competence in computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, atomic or molecular physics, computational materials science or simulation methods at the master level. Experience with modern programming languages (C, Fortran, C++ and Python) will be an advantage. Knowledge in modelling of chemical or biological systems or material science will also be regarded positively, as well as a strong background in mathematics or physics.

Qualification with a Master’s degree is required for commencement in the position. If you are near completion of your Master’s degree, you may still apply and submit a draft version of the thesis. You must have fulfilled all requirements (and passed all examinations) for the Master's degree before the planned commencement date.

The applicant must be able to document proficiency in English that satisfies the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, either as a native language, via undergraduate education in a Nordic or certain other countries, or by test scores as described here. Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is desirable due to teaching obligations.
