Salary: £31,931 to £34,709 per annum (dependent on skills and experience). A Specialist Allowance of up to £3000 per annum is also available for this role.
Hours: Full time or Part time (minimum 25 hours per week)
Contract Type: Open Ended.
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire. We also welcome fully remote applicants however you must be located within the UK.

The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. It supports a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering, and biology.
Robust and reliable data reduction and analysis software is a crucial part of the pipeline from experimental data acquisition through to publication. We work within an international collaboration, the Mantid project, to develop software used by ISIS and similar facilities over the world to support scientists in their data treatment needs.

We are looking for software developers to join our established team where you will help develop software solutions to meet the needs of the research scientists at ISIS. We use a mix of Python and C++ but the role is suited to someone who already has experience with these languages or has experience of similar technologies and is willing and able to quickly learn C++/Python.

We are excited by the best technologies and encourage learning and development to constantly improve our tools/techniques and processes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You need to be able to work with other members of the team to design and craft solutions that work and that our customers can easily use.
  • You will be expected to use agile tools and techniques to play a full part in all aspects of the software development lifecycle
  • You will be expected to contribute to the requirements gathering process, including communication with scientists
  • You will also be involved in DevOps and supporting new and existing systems.
  • You will be expected to use Continuous Integration tools to manage the development and deployment of our solutions.

Person Specification

The below criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I)

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a STEM subject, with significant focus on software development and an interest in science/mathematics. (S&I)
  • Experience of using some of the following professional development practices e.g. version control and issue, unit testing, continuous integration, agile practice(S&I)
  • Good verbal and written communications skills including the ability to explain technical concepts effectively (S&I)
  • Ability to learn quickly and share love of new tools and technologies (I)
  • Team player with a proactive attitude toward problem solving. (I)
  • Experience of developing software with a userbase using any of the following: Matlab, Python, Julia, R, C/C++, Modern Fortran, Rust, Java or C#. (S&I)
