A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the Yu group at the University of Maine. This position is fully funded by the US Department of Energy and is available from September 1, 2020, for a period of three years.  The postdoc fellow will have the opportunity to visit the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for a couple of months every year, working closely with ORNL research staff and taking advantage of advanced computing resources and state-of-the-art experimental resources at ORNL.

We are looking for a strongly motivated candidate to design a new type of 2D materials for energy storage applications, using a combination of first-principles density functional calculations and machine learning techniques.  Experiences in DFT calculations, good knowledge of solid-state physics and thermodynamics of materials, and a basic level of understanding in machine learning are preferred.

Candidates should send their CV with names of three references to Prof. Liping Yu ([email protected]). Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

The University of Maine is the state land and sea-grant university and maintains a leadership role as the System’s flagship university. It is located in beautiful Central Maine. Many employees report that a primary reason for choosing to come to UMaine is quality of life.  Numerous cultural activities, excellent public schools, safe neighborhoods, high-quality medical care, little traffic, and a reasonable cost of living make the greater Bangor area a wonderful place to live.

Dear Prof. Liping Yu,

I am Ghulam Abbas from Pakistan. I was fortunate enough to find about open position to join you as Post doctor at The University of Maine. As, i have completed my Ph.D. last year July, 2019, from University of Science and Technology China, Hefei, Anhui. Few months after my Ph. D completion in Sep, 2019 i joined as a post doctoral researcher at Shenzhen University, Guangdong China. I already have finish all my formal contract requirements here and now i seek a new position to make new strive in my research carrier. Lucky for me, the University of Maine seems to be an ideal platform as my area of research perfectly aligns with the research direction advertised for open post doctoral position.
I feel my research experience with first-principles based investigation of low dimensional materials including 2D materials, 1D nanotube and nano wire structures would help me to successfully fulfill requirements of this position. I would like to focus on designing novel low dimensional inorganic 2D materials by understanding their atomistic level interactions with the help of electronic structure theory in combination with first-principles based calculations. I believe my work with you will allow to guide fellow experimental researchers to easy doable paths by providing proof-to concept results.
Hope you take sometime to go through my CV. Your response would be highly encouraging for me.
