HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Biomaterial Science some 100 scientists research multi-functional, polymer-based biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine. Their implants and active agent delivery systems provide customised properties and functions to restore impaired body functions.

Postdoc Materials Scientist (m/f/d) 4D Printing of Shape-Memory Polymers

Fundamental and translational research at the Institute of Biomaterial Science of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is focused on the development of polymer-based biomaterials and devices for healthcare and robotics. At current, we are looking to fill the position of a Postdoc Materials Scientist (m/f/d) – 4D Printing of Shape-Memory Polymers. This will be initially a temporary assignment for two years.

Your tasks

As a Postdoc Materials Scientist (m/f/d) – 4D Printing of Shape-Memory Polymers you will be responsible for

  • computational design and experimental conception of multifunctional shape-memory polymer-based actuator components, demonstrators and devices; creation of computational models for describing and predicting device features
  • application of 3D and 4D printing of polymer-based materials based on commercial and custom-made materials, composites, multilayer and multicomponent systems etc.
  • set-up of fabrication schemes
  • adaptation of printing approaches to match material properties; creation of hybrid and multicomponent devices; establishing desired device functions by single or multimaterial design; selection of materials and material combinations
  • comprehensive characterisation of material and device properties and functions; creating and applying test environments to proof material functions/multifunctionality under application of various stimuli
  • training and supervision of the technical staff

Your profile

  • successfully completed materials science degree with PhD, e.g. in materials sciences, polymer engineering, mechanical engineering
  • track record of experience in shape-memory polymers/soft actuators and additive manufacturing documented by high-level publications
  • hands-on skills in set-up and handling of 3D printing instruments for polymers
  • design of devices (including CAD models) and prediction of device features by computational models
  • strong organizational and communication skills
  • fluent business language in English or German, with a working knowledge of the other; international applicants are encouraged to continuously work on German language skills
  • high level of personal commitment and stress resilience
  • experienced handling of MS Office, CAD software and instrument software
