Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry, Development of Machine Learning Potentials

Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany

A Ph.D. position is available in the group of Professor Jörg Behler, Theoretical Chemistry, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany (www.theochem.uni-goettingen.de).

The University of Göttingen is one of the leading research universities in Germany offering an exciting interdisciplinary environment and excellent facilities including several high-performance computing clusters in-house.

The main topic of the project is the development of novel types of atomistic potentials employing machine learning methods, in particular artificial neural networks, and the implementation of these methods in highly parallel computer codes. Machine learning potentials are a rapidly evolving field and allow to perform large-scale simulations including thousands of atoms on long time scales with the accuracy of electronic structure methods.

Interested candidates should hold a M.Sc. in chemistry, physics or a related field and should be highly motivated to develop state-of-the-art software for challenging applications in the field of atomistic simulations.

Note that this position requires programming experience, which must be described in detail in the application addressing the present experience of the candidate in Fortran, Python, C and/or C++. Further, the ideal candidate is familiar with Linux/Unix and has some background in electronic structure theory (DFT) and/or molecular dynamics. Excellent communication skills in English are mandatory. German language skills are advantageous but not essential.

Please send your application including a CV, a motivation letter, copies of university certificates (BSc and MSc, in German or English), a description of programming experience and contact addresses of two academic references by email as a single pdf-file to

Prof. Dr. Jörg Behler
Theoretische Chemie
Institut für Physikalische Chemie
Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
Tammannstr. 6
37077 Göttingen, Germany

Email: [email protected]

Only complete applications will be considered. The evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunity employer and we particularly welcome applications from women.
