PhD Position: Application of computational chemi ... (No replies)

Working very closely with the Home Office’s Centre for Applied Science and Technology, this project will explore the notion of using computational modelling techniques to direct various avenues of work under a forensic science remit. Among the areas of principal interest will be:

  • Blood analysis. The need to identify blood directly at scene without the use of chemical sprays is one of the key drivers behind this aspect of the work, as is modelling the long term properties of such exhibits.
  • Modelling solvent effects in development reagents for fingerprinting, re-formulating some print development reagents (addressing environmental concerns) and understanding the fundamental interactions that go on in the development process.
    Clearly such work will necessitate a keen interest in both computational modelling and forensic technology, as it will directly inform practical forensic techniques and approaches, and the student will interact directly with such practitioners.

    • This project is funded partly by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of the Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) awarded to Loughborough University, and partly by the Graduate School.

    Benefits of this DTP-studentship include:
    • A tax-free stipend of £14,296 per annum for 3.5 years. The stipend will increase in line with EPSRC recommended rates.
    • Tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, for up to 3.5 years.
    • A Research Training Support Grant worth at least £1,750 to assist with training over the course of the studentship.
    • Admission to the University as part of a cohort of EPSRC-DTP funded PhD students
