Submissions are invited for a Topical Issue of EPJD on the Advances in multi-scale modelling of intense electronic excitation processes.

The Topical Issue will be primarily based on contributions by members of COST Action 17126 TUMIEE (Towards Understanding and Modelling Intense Electronic Excitation). The main goal of the Action is to develop modelling methodologies to bridge spatial and time scales with the overall aim of describing how electronic excitation, happening at the attosecond and nanometer scales, propagates through the scales and leads to macroscopic effects in longer times like damage and failure of materials, or biological damage and cell death. The aim of this topical issue is to promote the growth and exchange of scientific information in these areas, assessing the methodological state-of-the-art and illustrating various aspects through specific applications, such as

  • photon and ion sources
  • laser irradiation and photo processes
  • XUV-FEL experiments and modelling
  • ultra-fast lasers and time-resolved spectroscopies
  • swift ion irradiation and track evolution
  • electronic stopping in solids and liquids
  • electron-hole plasmas in solids
  • electron-phonon and electron-photon interactions
  • creation and evolution of defects in solids
  • radiation damage of biological systems
  • radiation damage in space missions, fission, and fusion reactors
  • radiation processing of materials and in-situ monitoring of modifications
  • radiation detectors
  • plasma generation and evolution
  • plume formation and particle acceleration
  • industrial applications

The issue is open to everyone working in the field. We invite contributors to communicate their intention to submit manuscripts for this Topical Issue, via e-mail, to any of the Guest Editors (see below) as soon as possible. Please provide the tentative title of the paper and a short abstract. The full manuscripts should be submitted before the deadline directly to the EPJD Editorial Office at https://www.editorialmanager.com/epjd/.

Deadline for submission: March 31, 2021

Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the Topical Issue "Advances in multi-scale modelling of intense electronic excitation processes". Papers will be published continuously and will appear (as soon as accepted) on the journal website. The electronic version of the Topical Issue will contain all accepted papers in the order of publication. All submitted papers will be refereed according to the usual high standards of the journal. More general information about EPJD including instructions for authors is available at http://epjd.epj.org/.
