We invite highly motivated and skilled candidates to apply for this vacant PhD position. The successful candidate will work on the development and application of novel ab-initio based methods for describing light-matter interactions at the atomic scale. The goal of the first part of the project is to develop methods that can identify and quantify the recombination mechanisms leading to losses in all opto-electronic devices such as solar cells, light emitting diodes, and plasmonics. In the second phase of the project, the developed methods will be integrated into existing materials characterization workflows and used for high-throughput computation with the aim of discovering novel materials for opto-electronics. The project will focus on two-dimensional materials and heterostructures, but conventional bulk materials will also be considered.

The work will be carried out within the Center for Nanostructured Graphene (CNG) at DTU (http://www.cng.dtu.dk), which covers all aspects of research on 2D materials from materials synthesis over characterization to theory at various levels. The project will mainly apply Density Functional Theory and Many-Body Perturbation Theory as implemented in the GPAW software package (https://wiki.fysik.dtu.dk/gpaw/).

The position is well integrated into other theoretical and experimental activities within CNG and the computational activities at the Center for Atomic-scale Materials Design (CAMD) (http://www.camd.dtu.dk).

CNG and CAMD offer an international, social, and strong scientific environment at the Department of Physics, DTU, which is located in the northern Copenhagen area. Substantial computational resources are available through the DTU-supercomputer facility Niflheim (https://wiki.fysik.dtu.dk/niflheim/).

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have obtained excellent grades in his/her Bachelor and Masters degrees. He/she should be well-motivated, hardworking, and willing and able to work as part of a team.

Previous experience with electronic structure calculations and/or many-body theory is preferable as is some programming experience and/or a flair for working with computational methods.

Candidates for the PhD position should have a Masters’ degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science by the time they commence the project.

Approval and Enrollment of PhD Students

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled at the Physics PhD School at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrollment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see http://www.dtu.dk/english/education/phd.

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Kristian S. Thygesen.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms of the PhD position are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

The position, which involves a limited teaching obligation, includes salary and travel grants covering the three years it takes to obtain a PhD degree at a Danish university. Salary level is approximately 46.000 Euro/year incl. pension.

The position is available immediately, but the starting date can be as late as August 2018. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2018.

We offer (DTU)

DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and an academic freedom tempered by responsibility.
