Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2019, or before that date. This is a one-year fellowship with the possibility of renewal for additional two years upon satisfactory performance in the first year.
We are interested in hiring a recent PhD graduate with the background in either: (1) Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics with strong interest in Computational Materials Science and an aptitude for using a broad array of DFT-based methods, or (2) Theoretical Quantum Chemistry with an interest and demonstrated proficiency in performing molecular-scale ab initio calculations. The successful candidate will work closely with experimental groups, and is expected to take an active role in theoretical modeling and performing ab initio calculations of the defect structure and the electronic and optical properties of nanoparticles in different environments. The candidate should enjoy working in a highly collaborative, multi-departmental setting that gathers an interdisciplinary team of researchers associated with the Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology. There will also be a possibility for close interaction with industrial partners.
The salary range for this position is $45,000-$50,000 (Canadian dollars).
The Department of Applied Mathematics has 27 regular faculty and two lecturers. Research interests include scientific computing, mathematical physics, differential equations and dynamical systems, fluid dynamics, mathematical biology and medicine, and control theory. The department has a substantial graduate program with close to 100 graduate students, and strong undergraduate programs in applied mathematics and mathematical physics. Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology is a global center of research excellence in nanotechnology and its applications, which gathers 92 faculty members, mostly from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, who supervise about 400 graduate students in diverse areas of nanotechnology.
