Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The Physics Department at the University of Pisa open two postdoctoral positions, funded by national research projects PRIN "Germanium Quantum Wells for Sensing in the Mid-Infrared" and "N-Type Ge/SiGe THz Quantum Cascade Laser." These positions are set to commence in the first half of 2023.

The research activities are centered on the numerical investigation of low-dimensional devices based on Group IV materials for Silicon photonics applications. One research line deal with the modeling of integrated SiGe quantum well photodetectors coupled with Ge-rich waveguides, designed to operate in the mid-infrared spectrum. The other project focuses on the development of SiGe quantum cascade lasers emitting in the THz spectral region. The successful candidates will be responsible for designing and optimizing these devices using a combination of commercial and in-house software suites. Their theoretical predictions will be used to interpret electroluminescence, absorption, and photocurrent measurements. To this aim they will work in close interaction with experimental partners at Politecnico di Milano and Roma 3 University, as well as collaborate with researchers from leading European institutions in Germany and Switzerland.

We offer:

  • A one-year contract with the possibility of a one-year extension, contingent on mutual satisfaction.
  • A dynamic research environment with excellent working conditions.
  • Opportunities for frequent visits to esteemed institutions across Europe.
  • A competitive salary in a picturesque city of Tuscany, characterized by a low cost of living.

Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in condensed matter physics.
  • Proficiency with atomistic simulation codes.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Solid programming capabilities.
  • Fluency in English and the ability to independently produce research papers.

To apply, please send the following documents to [email protected]:

  • A motivation letter.
  • A comprehensive CV, including a list of publications and a brief description of your most relevant past accomplishments.
  • Contact details for two persons who can provide letters of recommendation for the candidate.
