A group of highly talented and motivated PhD candidates will start their PhD studies in the interdisciplinary field "Hybrid Structures on the Nanoscale: Chemical Concepts to Prepare Heterogeneous Nanostructures with Anisotropic Material Properties" within the DFG-funded Research Training Group NANOHYBRID in April 2020.
The application, selection and recruitment processes are well advanced. It is still possible to apply for two theory projects.

The two 3-years PhD positions in Theoretical Chemistry / Nanoscience are available in the groups of Gabriel Bester and Carmen Herrmann,

https://www.chemie.uni-hamburg.de/institute/ac/arbeitsgruppen/herrmann.html.

The research will focus on

• Bester group: developing and applying methods for evaluating exciton-plasmon couplings and optical properties in semiconducting dot-rod / metal hybrid systems, or
• Herrmann group: developing and applying methods towards automated decision strategies in simulating molecule-bridged nanoparticle hybrid systems.

Both will be done in close collaboration with experimentally working colleagues within the Research Training Group.

Applicants should have a strong interest in theoretical chemistry or theoretical physics, a (prospective) master's degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, nanoscience, or a related subject, and good basic knowledge of theoretical chemistry or solid-state physics. Solid English skills (both written and oral) are mandatory, knowledge of (or the willingness to learn) German as well as programming skills are a plus.

For your application, please familiarize yourself with the concept and the program of the Research Training Group on these webpages:

https://www.chemie.uni-hamburg.de/en/forschung/grk-nanohybrid/overview.html

Your application should consist of

• a one page motivation letter supporting the choice of the preferred research project,
• a curriculum vitae,
• the master thesis (or a draft thereof),
• copies of your graduation certificates including transcripts of records.

All application materials should be sent as one pdf file to [email protected].

Application deadline: March 9th 2020 or until the position is filled.

Earliest starting date: April 1st 2020.
