The Scientific Computing department provides large scale HPC facilities, computing data services and infrastructure at both Daresbury and Rutherford Appleton Laboratories in the UK.

The Department of around 160 staff also includes world leading experts in a number of scientific fields including computational chemistry, computational engineering, materials science, band theory, and computational biology, advanced research computing, atomic and molecular physics, numerical analysis, software engineering, data services, petascale storage, scientific information and scientific computing technology.

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join the senior management team as Deputy Director and Head of the Applications Division.

The role
You will be supporting the Director in the development and implementation of the Department’s strategic plans and policies.  As Head of the Applications Division, you will give both management and scientific leadership to the Division, to the Hartree Centre, and where appropriate to the Department.

Leadership of the Applications Division
• Leadership of the scientific programme in the department including setting the vision. This will include developing and building upon your own experience in one or more areas of computational or data intensive science.
• Encouraging excellence and advocacy of SCD science research capabilities, (and computational science research in particular), to the wider university and industrial computational research communities
• Contributions to all areas of the Departmental Strategy, and especially relating to development of the Department’s Computational Science programme
• Fostering a vibrant culture of Science and Research Excellence
• Lead the Applications Division including acting as line manager and senior line manager to individuals as necessary.
• Stakeholder management for key science organisations, including other Research Councils where appropriate.

Management of the Scientific Computing Department
• Deputy for the Director, SCD with full delegated authority and providing visible leadership of Scientific Computing at Daresbury Laboratory
• Membership of the Department’s Senior Leadership Team, representing the interests of the department, and the Applications Division.  Participation in all management processes, and leadership in those where appropriate and agreed with the Director
• Oversight of the Service Level Agreement with EPSRC for computational science support to CCPs, HECs and Software Outlook
• Advocacy for funding through preparation of cases for the spending reviews etc
• Participate in the Daresbury Laboratory Senior Management Team, representing SCD in this forum when the Director is not in attendance

Activities in support of the Hartree Centre
• SCD lead on the partnership with the Hartree Centre, in particular providing scientific support and guidance at all stages of the project lifecycle, including strategy, project identification and qualification, project selection and delivery.
• Membership of the Hartree Centre Senior Leadership Team and the Management and Operations Boards of the Hartree Centre Phase 3 STFC/IBM Research Collaboration
• Senior Line Management of the Hartree Centre funded project scientists based within the computational science groups of SCD, ensuring staff focus on effective project delivery while retaining personal and scientific development opportunities”
