Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon maintains a permanent outstation at DESY in Hamburg in order to provide synchrotron radiation to our users from academia and industry for the purpose of materials science. At the world's largest synchrotron radiation source PETRA III we jointly operate the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (HEMS, P07), the lmaging Beamline (IBL, P05) and the Nanofocus Endstation of Micro- and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering Beamline (MINAXS, P03) along with supporting laboratory instrumentation.

Each of these beamlines is a complex research instrument which relies on a centralized high-performance IT infrastructure but also on a multitude of internally developed software components. These take care of essential tasks like hardware control, data collection, user interfaces etc. In this position your responsibility will be to continuously maintain and improve the various software layers between the beamline hardware and its users. Therefore, you will contribute to ensuring the reliability of our beamlines and to further developing our cutting-edge research infrastructure.

The position will be available from February 2022 and is located in Hamburg. The contract is initially limited to 2 years and may be extended. The position can be filled part-time in principle.

Your tasks

  • maintain the existing and develop new software solutions essential for the everyday beamline operations
  • document new developments, train and support our scientists and users in its use
  • help beamline staff with solving IT-related technical problems
  • participate in beamline experiments to understand the requirements for new solutions in collaboration with staff and users
  • present the progress and results at workshops and conferences and contribute to scientific publications

Your profile

These qualifications are essential to fulfill the above-mentioned duties:

  • master's degree (or higher) in computer science, physics, electrical engineering, mathematics or related disciplines
  • proficiency in at least two high level programming languages (C/C++, Python etc.)
  • experience in software development and source code management tools (GitHub etc.)
  • experience in developing hardware control interfaces (e.g. cameras, detectors, sensors etc.)
  • service-oriented approach and the ability to develop user friendly interfaces
  • very good English and German language skills

These qualifications are considered assets:

  • Experience with using the TANGO controls framework
  • Experience with high-performance, parallel, or distributed computing
  • Experience with working at a synchrotron beamline (as staff or user)
  • Proficiency in the Java language
