Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientist for Beamline P21.2

DESY

DESY, with its 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

With the storage ring of PETRA III and the free-electron laser FLASH, DESY offers a unique combination of photon sources to the scientific community. PETRA III, one of the most brilliant hard X-ray facilities worldwide, currently provides 23 undulator beamlines for experiments utilizing the extreme source brilliance. High-energy X-rays are a powerful tool for the characterization of polycrystalline materials and are utilized at the P07 and P21 beamlines. Over the last decade, grain resolved diffraction techniques have been demonstrated and advanced instrumentation has been implemented. We are seeking a scientist for the implementation of data analysis and reconstruction software that will be used by both beamlines.

The position

  • Implementation of analysis software for grain-resolved diffraction techniques at beamlines P07 and P21.2
  • Participation at experiments and familiarity with instrumentation
  • Collaboration with international software development groups
  • Software implementation and workflow based on the DESY computing infrastructure
  • Documentation and demonstration of reconstruction of experimental data sets

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, computer science or related fields
  • Experience in the structured development and implementation of scientific software
  • Familiarity with high-power computing concepts
  • Experience with materials characterization by X-ray diffraction
  • Excellent knowledge of English and teamwork abilities
