Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Job description

Researcher Position in Theoretical inorganic materials chemistry (batteries)

One researcher position is available at the Department of Chemistry (KI) / Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN). The duration of the position is 2 years.

More about the position

We are searching for a candidate with a strong expertise, willingness and ability to learn and apply new methods, who is creative of nature and skilled to work independently as well in a team. The candidate must be able and willing to take on tasks for the benefit of our research section.

The candidate shall work within the field of inorganic materials chemistry with focus on battery materials in the NAFUMA section at SMN, KI, University of Oslo. The candidate is anticipated to collaborate with PhDs, postdoctoral fellows and researchers working on materials synthesis, characterization and modelling within our battery group. He/she is expected to interact and interface between academia, industry and end users within the FME centre MoZEES (Mobility Zero Emission Energy Systems), which has a broad focus on battery and hydrogen technology for the transportation sector.

The researcher shall apply computational modelling to gain insight into stability, structure - property relationships, electrochemistry, reactivity, and electronic/ionic transport in battery materials (cathode, electrolyte, anode) with significant focus on materials for Li-ion batteries. The initial focus for the hired researcher will be on atomistic modelling, however, modelling at component level may be added as a topic of interest.

The successful candidate shall have documented expertise as specified:

  • Knowledge of battery materials and battery chemistries
  • Expertise in DFT simulations using different DFT codes and software
  • Skills in transport properties calculations using NEB, BT, Molecular dynamic simulations, etc.
  • Programming skills in python/FORTRAN/C/C++

The successful candidate must have good collaborative skills. Personal suitability will be given a particular attention in the selection process.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition is to be among Europe's leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Candidates for the position are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. The candidate must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian PhD degree within chemistry, physics or a related field, and with relevant specialization within computational science applied to research topics within inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry or materials science.

The applicant is requested to clearly state in the motivation letter his/her expertise within (i) computational materials science of relevance for battery materials supported by relevant publications and (ii) simulation tools and programming experience as outlined above.

The candidates must have fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

An expert committee will evaluate the applications. The committee will put emphasis on scientific qualification with focus on documented skills within computational materials science. Information that should be considered in the evaluations must be submitted within the deadline. The names of two reference persons should be provided.

How to apply

The application must include:

  • cover letter (statement of motivation, summarizing scientific work and research interest)
  • CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
  • copies of educational certificates (academic transcripts only)
  • a complete list of publications
  • list of reference persons: 2 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)

The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system. Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University's grading system, and should NOT be sent or emailed to the address below or to any other individual.
