Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

  • Are you passionate about improving energy efficiency and reducing the greenhouse-gas impact of energy systems to improve the performance of the Australian electricity grid?
  • Analyse and model Australian energy networks, energy operation, behaviour and control

The Position:

As part of the Energy Modelling, Analysis and Optimisation Group, you will be conducting exciting research into the operation, behaviour and control of energy systems. The work will focus on the analysis and mining of new large-scale datasets that capture Australian energy use, the modelling of modern Australian electricity networks and may include the design and optimisation of electrical load and generation controllers. You will be working towards goals of effectively integrating renewable energy, improving network performance, lowering network infrastructure costs and delivering value for Australian energy consumers.

Specifically you will:

  • Analyse, process, visualise and mine large-scale energy-use datasets from across the Australian energy sector, drawing on a background in data analytics, statistics or computer science.
  • Model and simulate the behaviour of Australian electricity systems, including electricity network power flows and the operation of distributed energy resources, such as batteries, solar systems, electric vehicles and remotely controlled air-conditioning systems.
  • Develop or analyse optimal control systems for distributed energy resources, drawing on electrical engineering, computer science or mathematical capabilities and toolsets.
  • Deliver outputs in line with external client expectations, including the production of reports that communicate complex science in a concise, clear and accessible manner.
  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
  • Produce high quality papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.

Location: Newcastle, NSW

Salary: $92,591 - $100,199 plus up to 15.4% super

Tenure: 3 year term

Reference: 12482

To be successful, you will have:

  • 1.A doctorate and/or equivalent professional experience in a relevant discipline area, such as computer science and data analytics, applied mathematics and statistics, or electrical engineering and control.
  • 2.Proven experience in the application of contemporary computer science, mathematical or engineering techniques to complex data mining and system optimisation, including the design, delivery and documentation of science activities with a strong applied focus.
  1. Demonstrated expertise in multiple programming languages and data analytic frameworks (such as Java, R, Clojure, Python, C++, Tableau and Microstrategy)
  2. A record of science innovation and creativity plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations. Experience in authoring professional-quality articles, for academic and/or non-academic audiences.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the analysis of noisy, incomplete or complex energy datasets and applied research with real-world energy systems including HVAC, grids and renewable energy integration is desirable as is experience demonstrating a motivation to improve energy efficiency, reduce the greenhouse-gas impact of energy systems and improve the performance of the Australian electricity grid.
  4. Experience with engineering simulation and modelling platforms (such as PowerFactory, MatLAB, SINCAL and Octave), and experience in the design and optimisation of control systems, particularly with a focus on real-world application is also desirable.
