Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Postdoctoral position at Cambridge on computational condensed matter physics for Earth and Mars geochemistry

We are seeking a suitably qualified person for a Postdoctoral position working within a wider project involving experimentalists led by Prof. David Hodell at the Department of Earth Sciences in Cambridge. The successful candidate will work with Prof. Emilio Artacho in the Theory of Condensed Matter group at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, on the theoretical prediction of isotopic fractionation coefficients of H and O in water molecules between liquid water and hydrous minerals of geochemical interest in Earth and martian environments. The calculation of isotopic fractionation coefficients is of great interest in many geo-contexts, and represents an important and interesting challenge to condensed matter physicists, especially when liquids are involved, since they depend on the quantum fluctuations of the nuclei (the thermal fluctuations given by first-principles molecular dynamics give these coefficients equal to 1). The work will be in direct contact with the experimental team.

The position is for 2 years with a possibility of extension to 31 Jan 2019.

Requirements: PhD in computational condensed matter physics, materials physics, theoretical chemistry or closely related field (or in the final stages of obtaining such a PhD). Experience in first-principles electronic structure calculations based on density-functional theory. Skills in programming (preferably using modern standards of Fortran). Solid background in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. Experience in geophysics/geochemistry is a plus, but not necessary. The successful candidate will have good communication skills in order to present results at international meetings and a track record of publication in peer-reviewed international journals is desirable.
