Research Assistant (m/f/d) – with focus on ceramic additive manufacturing

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

The job description includes research activities in the frame of a research project for the development of porous ceramic monoliths for the adsorption of atmospheric water:

  • Development of an extrusion-based additive manufacturing technology (Robocasting/​Direct ink Writing) for the generation of geometrically complex porous ceramic monoliths
  • Selection and characterization of ceramic feedstocks optimized for water adsorption applications
  • Development of ceramic feedstocks for the additive manufacturing and investigation of their rheological properties
  • Further development of a 3D-printer and optimization of the process parameters for the extrusion of ceramic feedstocks
  • Optimization of the additive manufacturing of complex-shaped porous ceramic monoliths and characterization of their adsorption properties in close collaboration with a project partner from the industry
  • Collection of research data and compilation of project reports

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (diploma or master's degree) in the field of materials science, chemistry, physics, process engineering or a comparable field
  • Experience with ceramic processing and with the development of water-based ceramic feedstocks
  • Experience with additive manufacturing technologies of the category “material extrusion”
  • Experience with extrusion-based ceramic additive manufacturing technologies (Robocasting/​Direct Ink Writing) is advantageous
  • Experience with the rheological characterization of ceramic feedstocks is advantageous
  • Experience with the characterization of the adsorption properties of zeolites or of other adsorption materials is advantageous
  • Knowledge of modelling with CFD-methods and a basic knowledge of CAD software is advantageous
  • Good English or German language skills
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as flexibility
