A Research Associate position is available with immediate effect in computational materials science, as part of the Faraday Institution project, 'FutureCat', developing cathode materials for next generation lithium batteries.

Working with Professor Chris Pickard in the Materials Theory Group at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, West Cambridge, the successful candidate will be required to use first principles methods to understand and design novel battery cathode materials, and their interfaces. In particular, the candidate will be applying and developing computational methods (e.g. J. Chem. Phys. 154, 174111 (2021)) to discover high-performance cathode materials, and be collaborating with experimentalists on characterization of the interfaces between cathodes, coatings, and electrolytes. The applicant is also encouraged to develop their own research interest that falls into the goal of the project.

The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related subject, and have specific experience in the application of solid state DFT codes (CASTEP/VASP/QE), molecular dynamics, and first principles structure prediction (AIRSS) to energy materials. We require someone with a proven track record of publications in computational energy materials science, and who can demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience of modelling complex interfaces is desirable, as is experience of materials data management and analysis, including thermodynamic calculations based on first-principles methods and other similar techniques, an interest in using new computational methodologies, and experience of managing a research programme. Experience of machine learning and materials informatics would be beneficial.

The post-holder will be required to plan, develop and implement a programme of computational materials research, analyse and manage research data and software, attend regular work package meetings, write project reports, and research articles, and be responsible for ensuring the research programme is consistent with the FutureCat project workplan.
