Dear colleagues,

In 2019, the chemistry department of the Paris-Sud University in Orsay will hire a professor in Numerical Simulation and Theoretical Chemistry.

 Important remarks:

Most of the teaching activities will be in French and the research activities will be developed at the Chemical Physics Laboratory (LCP, http://www.lcp.u-psud.fr) or at the Institute for Molecular Sciences (ISMO, http://www.ismo.u-psud.fr).

Contacts:  – LCP: David Lauvergnat ([email protected])

                   – ISMO: Eric Charron at ([email protected])

Research activities:

The hired person will propose a research project in relation to the research topics developed at LCP (TheoSim team, see http://www.lcp.u-psud.fr/spip.php?rubrique158) or at ISMO in which several research groups are involved (see http://www.ismo.u-psud.fr). More precisely, the research activities of these laboratories focus on theoretical studies of processes of interest in Physical-Chemistry and they involve developing models to simulate these processes. In addition, the members of these laboratories are strongly involved in the development of computer codes and approaches to study complex systems: multi-scale approaches to study proteins, polymers and fluid transport properties; the coupling of Monte-Carlo approaches and quantum chemistry methods for the study of spectra; the development of approaches including quantum effects to study photo-induced and/or reactive systems.

At LCP, the Theory and Simulation (TheoSim) group, is composed of 10 researchers. At ISMO 16 researchers are involved in such research activities.

Teaching activities:

The hired person will be involved at all levels (from the bachelor level L1 to the master level M2) for chemistry and physical-chemistry courses. More precisely, he or she will teach Quantum Chemistry from level L3 to level M2, through lectures, tutorials, and practical works and Quantum Mechanics in relation to the study of molecular and macromolecular systems:

  • for instance, theoretical chemistry in the “Magistère de Physico-Chimie Moléculaire” or in the Physical Chemistry international master program SERP+, or in the Chemistry Master of Paris-Saclay University.
  • or computational approaches in quantum chemistry at the organic chemistry M2 level.

A good knowledge of quantum chemistry methods (based on the wave function and on density functional theory) is therefore necessary.

The hired person will be involved in teaching teams and will continue the development of pedagogical tools to help the learning of quantum mechanics (including practical works or tutorials and educational resources available on the Moodle ECampus platform). She or he will also be involved in the construction of theoretical chemistry courses within the future Paris-Saclay University.

Eric Charron and David Lauvergnat
