Summary of Duties:

The Computational Catalysis group at Washington State University (wsu.edu) has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral scientist to contribute to the group’s work in electric field effects in catalysis, with applications to solid oxide electrolysis cells. The post-doctoral scientist will work on a collaborative project with the experimental group of Prof. Nikolla at Wayne State University titled “Elucidating the Roles of Electric Fields Within Mixed Ionic and Electronic Conducting Oxides Under Electrochemical Reducing Conditions”. A recent perspective was written on this subject. Strong electric fields, such as those found in a solid oxide electrolysis cell or in a field ion microscope, can have significant effects on adsorption energies, reaction rates, and even reaction mechanisms. DFT simulations will be used to quantify these effects on metal surfaces and supported metal particles and to determine their impact on reaction pathways and kinetics.

The post-doctoral scientist will also work on a collaborative project with the experimental group of Prof. Yong Wang, who holds a joint position at Washington State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, titled “Elucidating Fundamental Chemical Transformations Using Well-defined Mixed Metal-oxide Catalysts”.

Finally, the post-doctoral scientist will help the current graduate students in the McEwen group with other ongoing projects.

Additional Information:

The post-doctoral scientist will receive a highly competitive salary that will be commensurate with his/her experience. The researcher will have access to state-of-the-art computational facilities that are funded by the Department of Energy. He/she will also have access to the computing facilities that are sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The researcher will also be given the opportunity to present his/her research at National meetings.

Required Qualification:

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related field and demonstrated record of research accomplishment and publication, strong communication skills, experience in ab initio electronic structure methods at interfaces, and strong knowledge of statistical thermodynamics and kinetics.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ideally, the researcher will have experience with the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package and the CRYSTALsoftware simulation package.
