Brown University Chemistry professor is seeking a highly talented and motivated postdoctoral fellow in computational/theoretical quantum chemistry/physics. The fellow will be engaged in developing theories and algorithms that employ a combination of machine learning and stochastic quantum chemistry methods as part of larger US Department of Energy-supported centers. The fellow will therefore be engaged in multi-group collaborative efforts with other theorists and experimentalists, and will be expected to help train graduate and undergraduate students. The position represents an excellent opportunity to develop professional networks and enhance communications skills.

Ideal candidates should have a background in electronic structure theory/many-body physics, familiarity with machine learning, and, at least, an understanding of Monte Carlo techniques.  Programming skills in C, C++, and Python and an ability to work well with others are a must. Candidates with a demonstrated record of creativity and independent thought will be preferred, regardless of background. All hires will be given 20% time to explore research topics, continue past research, and develop collaborations on their own.

Those hired will sit in the Brown Chemistry Department, a department that houses a number of highly-regarded theorists and physical chemists (see https://www.brown.edu/academics/chemistry/). A number of other computational chemists and physicists are also housed in the Department of Physics and the Division of Engineering. Brown University is a private, Ivy League University located in Providence, RI, less than an hour away from Boston and less than four hours away from New York City. The university is home to a lively campus, where students are intellectually engaged both inside and outside the classroom. Brown offers an abundance of top departments in the country and interdisciplinary work is encouraged.

Candidates should email a CV, a brief personal statement addressing their interest in this position, and two or more professional recommendations to [email protected]. All candidates will be interviewed shortly afterwards. Those hired are expected to start during the fall of 2019 and to have completed their Ph.D.s before that date. More information about the group may be found at: https://www.brown.edu/research/labs/rubenstein/.
