Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Postdoctoral research associate (m/f/d) in the field of metallurgy

Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract until 30.04.2026
Full-time / suitable as part-time employment

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

BAM carries out research on the thermochemical treatment of industrial residues with the aim of reducing potential hazards and recovering valuable materials. For this purpose, we operate a thermal technical centre with various aggregates such as muffle furnaces, tube furnaces, rotary kilns, an induction furnace and a pilot-scale electric arc furnace. Process developments are intended to contribute to the safe recycling of wastes and industrial residues, thus strengthening the circular economy and preventing negative environmental impacts. Within the scope of research, pyrometallurgical processes are used to recover metals and to recycle mineral fractions. For example, projects are underway for the reductive melting treatment of steelworks slags with the aim of recovering metals and modifying the slag by adjustments in the composition and suitable cooling regimes into materials for climate-friendly use in cements. Recent research is already focusing on slags that will be produced in the new hydrogen-based steel production routes in the future. Furthermore, research questions on the recovery of critical raw materials from various waste streams such as spent batteries, bauxite residues or electronic scrap are being addressed. The pyrometallurgical processes investigated at BAM should also be geared towards climate neutrality in the future, which limits the use of carbon as a reducing agent. For this reason, the focus is on pyrometallurgical processes using hydrogen as a reducing agent.
The scope of duties includes the following activities:

  • Support for ongoing pyrometallurgical topics and projects
  • Participation in experimental investigations at the pilot-scale electric arc furnace of BAM
  • Conceptual development of hydrogen pyrometallurgy at BAM
  • Scientific work on hydrogen plasma in cooperation with the partner Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung MPIE (basic investigations are to be carried out within the framework of research visits to the MPIE)
  • Experimental investigations on the use of hydrogen plasma at BAM's pilot-scale electric arc furnace (these investigations are also being carried out in close cooperation with the MPIE)
  • Thermodynamic simulation

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (diploma/master) in the field of metallurgy with a very good doctoral degree
  • Professional experience in the field of pyrometallurgy
  • Knowledge of hydrogen as a reducing agent in pyrometallurgy
  • Good publication activity
  • Goal-oriented and structured way of working, ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills

We offer:

  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society
  • Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutes and industrial companies
  • Outstanding facilities and infrastructure
  • Flexible working hours and mobile working

Your application:

We welcome applications via the online application form by 31.03.2023. Alternatively, you can also send your application by post, quoting the reference number 46/23-4.4 to:
