About the Positions: Three postdoctoral positions are currently available in the research groups of Matteo Cococcioni (Department of Physics, University of Pavia, Italy) and Rocco Martinazzo (Department of Chemistry, University of Milan, Italy). These positions are part of a collaborative project recently funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), which focuses on the Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect.
About the Project: CISS refers to a set of effects related to the ability of chiral molecules and crystals to induce and enhance spin polarization when electrons interact with or pass through chiral materials. Since its discovery in 1999, CISS has garnered significant attention in the scientific community due to its vast technological potential, ranging from applications in spintronics to redox chemistry. Notably, CISS offers the enticing prospect of eliminating the need for magnetic fields and materials in various technologies, achieving similar functionalities with abundant, easily synthesizable, and cost-effective chemical species. However, the full exploitation of CISS has been impeded by the absence of a comprehensive microscopic explanation of the effect. The funded project's primary objectives are to elucidate the origin of CISS and establish a robust theoretical framework. This framework will serve as the foundation for understanding and harnessing the complex phenomenology associated with CISS.
Candidate Profile: Prospective candidates should hold a PhD and MSc degree in physics, chemistry, or material sciences, and possess a keen interest in both theoretical and computational work. Essential qualifications include strong programming and communication skills, experience in high-performance computing, and proficiency in methods development. Candidates with interests and experience in electronic structure theory, quantum dynamics, and differential geometry and topology will be highly regarded. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, creative, and capable of working independently.
What We Offer: These positions are available for up to two years, with options for either 12 + 12 months or 18 + 6 months, offering a competitive salary. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative environment bridging both research groups. The positions will be situated within a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and inspiring research environment.
How to Apply: Interested individuals are encouraged to submit informal inquiries and expressions of interest, along with a CV and a motivation letter, to Prof. Matteo Cococcioni (email: [email protected]) and Prof. Rocco Martinazzo (email: [email protected]). Candidates will receive formal application instructions once the positions are officially open. The expected starting date for these positions is early 2024, to be determined by mutual agreement.
