Job summary

Applications are invited for two Research Associate positions within the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Group of the Department of Physics. You will work on the newly established Samsung-Imperial project “Quantum Simulation and Algorithms for New Quantum Materials”.

Many of the unsolved problems in materials science and fundamental physics are directly related to the limitations of classical computers. Our lack of understanding of strongly-correlated quantum phenomena such as high-temperature superconductivity, rare-earth magnetism, and molecular excitations has been a major obstacle to new technological applications. You will use the existing hardware of universal quantum computers to tackle real-world problems in materials science.

Duties and responsibilities

The duties will include identifying concrete problems, developing new algorithms and implementation schemes for quantum simulations. You will have direct access to the IBM Q quantum computer with currently up to 49 qubits. In this interdisciplinary project, you will work as part of a dedicated team of two Research Associates and four PhD students led by Professor Myungshik Kim, Professor Peter Haynes, Dr Johannes Knolle, Professor Sir Peter Knight and Dr. Florian Mintert, Professor Matthew Foulkes, and Dr Mario Berta at Imperial, and Professor Sougato Bose at UCL.

Essential requirements

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in one of the following areas:

• Theory of Quantum Many-Body Systems;
• Simulation of Quantum Materials;
• Electronic Structure Calculations; or
• Quantum Information and Quantum Algorithms.

You must also be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• Evidence of outstanding promise and originality in research, demonstrated by a good publication record, in at least one of the above areas, commensurate with your career stage, as well as a strong interest in, and the ability to learn about, the others.
• Proven research experience in programming and numerical methods for quantum many-body systems, quantum chemistry or quantum information.
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively.

In addition to above, the following would be advantageous:

• Proven research experience in quantum simulations
• Knowledge of Quantum Many-Body Theory, Quantum Chemistry and/or Quantum Materials; Quantum Simulations and Quantum Information
