Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Postdoctoral fellow on electronic and magnetic properties of novel materials

The Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems (ICMCS) at the University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position on theoretical nanoscale magnetism. The successful candidate will be based at the group of Dr Elton Santos at the ICMCS in Edinburgh, UK.

The project is on forefront of several research topics on the electronic and magnetic properties of advanced energy materials. In particular, on the next generation of compounds for information platforms including 2D sheets, van der Waals interfaces, Weyl-semimetals, topological insulators and magnetic twisted layers. This position provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamentals research in the emerging area of power-efficient device platforms which aims to make smart devices even smarter. Ongoing experimental collaborations with the Max Planck Institute (Stuttgart), National University of Singapore, Cornell University, Harvard University and UC Berkeley will be undertaken during the position.

The successful candidate will focus on method developments, optimizing and applying new theoretical techniques to simulate novel magnetic phenomena. He/she will join an interdisciplinary team with expertise on strongly correlated methods, Monte Carlo techniques and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation approaches. The candidate will also be involved at the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics with the Computational Materials Physics group for further collaborations and projects.

The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility to be renewed up to 3 years subject to performance and mutual agreement.

Job requirements

  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry or closely related field (condensed matter, quantum-chemistry, numerical methods for solid-state).
  • Experience with ab initio calculations and electronic structure methods on DFT and TDFT
  • Experience in coding languages using C/C++ or Fortran, Python, Matlab.
  • Experience in magnetism, Monte Carlo simulations and model Hamiltonians.
  • Excellent communication skills in presentations and especially in writing original scientific research through peer-reviewed publications.

The start date is negotiable but prompt start would be desirable.

Application

Interested candidates should apply at the link below including:

  • CV and publication list
  • Cover letter or research statement including past achievements and future perspectives.
  • 2-3 recommendation letters
