Postdoctoral Associate – Computational Materials
Department: GL – Geophysical Lab
Salary: TBD
Location: Washington, DC
The Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, seeks applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of computational materials. The position will focus on using computational methodologies to investigate solid-state phase transition mechanisms and propose viable synthetic pathways. The successful candidate will work closely with experimental chemists, physicists and materials scientists to validate computational predictions.
Essential qualifications: A PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field is a requirement for this position. Candidates should be familiar with density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations (including programs such as VASP, ABINIT, Quantum ESPRESSO, CASTEP, etc.) and first-principles and semi-empirical molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods.
Desired qualifications: Experience using methods such as Metadynamics, Nudged Elastic Band and/or Transition Path Sampling is desirable. A strong coding background in Fortran90 and C++ is preferred. Candidates are expected to be able to work in both independent and collaborative group environments.
The appointment is for one year, with possibility for a second year pending progress and availability of funds. This position is available immediately, and will remain open until filled.
