Uppsala University announces up to three postdoc positions in solid state theory. The postdocs will work in the join the research environment in computational materials physics lead by Prof. Olle Eriksson (Uppsala University), Dr. Anders Bergman (Uppsala University), Professor Anna Delin (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm) and Dr. Danny Thong (Örebro University). The joint research is based on advanced first-principles electronic structure calculations, combined with atomistic spin Hamiltonians and/or phenomenological models to study fundamental magnetic and topological phenomena from a computational/theoretical perspective. Current research interests in the environment include atomistic spin dynamics, multiscale dynamics, flexomagnetism, emergence of topological magnetic textures, topological magnons, 2D magnetic materials, and femtosecond physics. The research is funded through highly competitive grants from Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation (kaw.wallenberg.org ) and the Swedish Research Council. Code and method development is an important part of these activities. We plan that the postdocs will primarily focus on bringing a selection of our in-house developed electronic structure and atomistic spin dynamics codes to current high-performance computer architectures, such as the GPU-based LUMI supercomputer ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LUMI ), which is the fastest supercomputer in Europe and third fastest globally. Furthermore, we also wish to develop new scientific visualization and analysis approaches for the complex magnetic phenomena we investigate, using the Inviwo software, as part our vision to develop a ”materials digital twin”. The physical phenomena and materials we study are of relevance for future information technology such as for example ultra-low-power spintronics and devices for neuromorphic computing.

The applicant is expected to have a PhD degree in Physics, with a good background in solid-state physics, numerical methods and theory in general. The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the PhD thesis, or equivalent, published articles and other relevant materials, if available. Also, letter(s) of recommendation can be included.

The position is full time and is open for two years and starting date is May 2023, or after negotiation.
