Within the LOEWE-Schwerpunkt RESPONSE „Resource efficient permanent magnets with optimized usage of rare earths” we are seeking applications for a

Research Associate (Post-Doc)

in the field of „Theory of magnetic materials“

for the recently established Junior Professorship Prof. Dr. Hongbin Zhang allocated at the Department of Material- und Geowissenschaften starting immediately for a mimimum period of 3 years (extension possible).

We are looking for an excellent candidate with expertise in the theory of magnetic materials. The scientific focus of the position is on modelling structure-property relationships in rare-earth free or rare-earth reduced permanent magnets by means of electronic structure calculations using methods that extend beyond mean-field approaches (DFT). Expertise in high-throughput methods is also desirable. The candidate will work on challenging problems in the field of Theory of magnetic materials development that will make an impact on future industrial applications, collaboratively within a highly interdisciplinary network involving 11 partners of different departments of the TU Darmstadt. Required Education and Skills:

  • PhD in a relevant area of functional materials such a Physics, Material Science, Chemistry or engineering Practical experience in modelling structure-property relationships in rare-earth free or rare-earth reduced permanent magnets by means of electronic structure calculations using methods that extend beyond mean-field approaches (DFT)
  • Experience in high-throughput methods is also desirable
  • Proven track record for readiness to take on responsibility, strong ability for independent problem solving and troubleshooting
  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented personality with good interpersonal skills supporting the team-work in an international, interdisciplinary environment
  • Excellent communication skills, full command of the English language (oral and written); knowledge of German is an advantage
  • Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and research presentations is a plus
