Post-doctoral position in theoretical and computational magnetic materials modelling
University of Warwick, U.K.
Fulltime, 4 years
The well-documented, growing demand for strong permanent magnetic materials which maintain performance at high temperatures (T > 400 K) but contain as little of the most critical rare earth and transition metal elements as possible requires a quantitative understanding of the underlying condensed matter physics. At the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham in the U.K. we are launching an integrated theory-experiment programme to uncover key design principles.
For the theory side of the project ("Investigations of the Physics underlying the principles of design of rare earth transition metal permanent magnets" (PRETAMAG) funded by the EPSRC (UK)) we are looking for a postdoctoral research assistant with expertise in theoretical and computational materials modelling.
Candidates for the post should possess a solid background in density-functional theory and previous experience in first principles calculations of bulk crystalline materials. They should show a strong interest and aptitude for theoretical development and scientific computing. A background in magnetic materials and experience with optimisation
of high performance computing codes will also be desirable. The post is up to 4 years in duration, available from October 2015 and based at the University of Warwick. We hope that towards the end of the 4 year period the successful post-holder will be well-placed to develop their own application for a personal research fellowship to progress their career.
Candidates should be capable of working within a broader research team, demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills, and maintaining a current knowledge of the magnetic materials literature. They should be willing to play active roles in weekly progress and planning meetings for the project as well as dissemination of results.
The closing date for applications is Tuesday 1st September 2015 with interviews currently planned for the week beginning 14 September 2015.

Informal inquiries can be made to Prof.Julie Staunton [email protected]
