The Strategic Initiative “Functional Magnetic Materials for biomedical and energy relevant
applications” is a new, coordinated research initiative which includes a PhD program at the Immanuel
Kant Baltic Federal University and partner universities. The Initiative (for details see
http://eng.kantiana.ru/5-100/unit/ ) aims at establishing a world-class research environment until
2020. It is devoted – but not limited to - to the theoretical and experimental understanding of
functionalized magnetic nanomaterials – ranging from nano-hybrids for biomedical technology to
innovative materials for energy applications, e.g. magnetic refrigeration and modern spintronics.
Analytical methods – including synchrotron based characterization techniques -, numerical
simulations and film/nanoparticles synthesis aspects will play a dominant role. Funds for traveling to
international conferences and for visits to foreign universities are provided. Successful candidates will
work closely in a team comprised of experimental chemists, physicists and materials scientists as well
as theorists.
Application deadline: The positions are available immediately, and will remain open until filled.
Application requirements:
The appointments are initially for 6 months, with possibility for another 2 plus 2 years extension
pending progress and availability of funds. The application requires an above-average track record.

• a copy of your university degrees (certified translation into English)
• a curriculum vitae with specific information about your scientific expertise, publication and grant
acquisition record.
• a two page research proposal which gives reason to expect excellent research results.
• contact information (phone , email) of at least two university teachers as reference.
