Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Post-doctoral position in computational physics and machine learning

Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland

As part of a new Academy of Finland project ‘Molecular resolution at solid-liquid interfaces’ (MERLIN), a post-doctoral position is available in computational physics and machine learning. The MERLIN project targets the development of a novel methodology for solid-liquid simulations in the context of Atomic Force Microscopy, encapsulating the chemical and atomic structure of the surface, the nature and structure of the solution and the role of the tip in a machine learning approach. This involves high-throughput molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the development of an efficient machine learning infrastructure.

The project is based at the Surfaces and Interfaces at the Nanoscale (SIN) group (physics.aalto.fi/sin) led by Prof. Adam Foster within the Department of Applied physics at Aalto University. MERLIN is also strongly linked to the experimental activities of our collaborators in Germany and Japan, and we anticipate working strongly with experimentalists to validate our simulations.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS AND DETAILS

Successful candidates shall have or are close to having a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines. Experience of computational physics simulations and scientific programming are required, and some experience in machine learning techniqueswould be a benefit. The candidate must have a high motivation for research, show evidence of good written and oral communication skills in English, and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team. The standard contract periods are 2 years for post-doctoral researchers, with possibilities for extension (the project lasts for 4 years). Typical gross salary ranges at the Aalto School of Science are 3400-3800 €/month for post-doctoral researchers. Moreover, Finland has a comprehensive social security system.

HOW TO APPLY

The call is open and the position can be filled as soon as a proper candidate is found. The deadline for the first round of applications is 12th August 2018. Applications should consist of a scientific CV including publication list and the names of two referees. Inquiries and applications should be made through the Aalto recruitment system:
