Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The Chair of Theory of Excited States of Integrated Solid State Systems / Research Center Future Energy Materials and Systems (RC FEMS) at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy is looking for two

postdocs (m,f,x) for 3 years

The successful applicant will become part of the research group of Prof. Silvana Botti at RC FEMS and at the Faculty of Physics of the Ruhr University Bochum. The newly founded Research Center Future Energy Materials and Systems of the Research Alliance Ruhr focuses on developing innovative materials and systems for sustainable energy applications. The center's research areas include photovoltaics, thermoelectricity, energy storage, fuel cells, and sustainable chemical processes, among others. Their interdisciplinary approach involves collaborations between physicists, chemists, engineers, and material scientists to address the challenges of transitioning towards a low-carbon economy. The center also offers opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to participate in cutting-edge research projects and receive advanced training in the field of energy materials and systems. The chair of Prof. Botti is affiliated with the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the Ruhr University Bochum. This faculty is a leading research and teaching institution in the fields of experimental and theoretical physics and astronomy, with a focus on condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and particle physics.

The successful candidate will work in the group of Prof. Silvana Botti on ab initio calculations of electronic excitations and charge dynamics at functional interfaces for energy production and storage. Different research projects are available, depending on the background and the interests of the candidates.

Your tasks:

  • The candidate will develop and apply first-principles methods and advanced machine learning models to predict electronic excitations at functional interfaces.
  • The candidate will write scientific articles and present their research results at conferences and workshops.
  • The candidate will be involved in the supervision and training of doctoral students, as well as bachelor and master students.
  • The candidate will contribute to writing grant proposals.
  • The candidate will collaborate with experimental groups at RC FEMS and at the Faculty of Physics, and strengthen the research activities of the Centre for Interface-Dominated High Performance Materials (ZGH).

Your profile:

  • PhD in physics, theoretical chemistry or computational materials science. Candidates expected to earn their degree before December 2023 are welcome to apply.
  • Solid knowledge of quantum mechanics and theoretical solid state physics.
  • Solid knowledge of (time-dependent) density functional theory and/or many-body condensed matter physics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Advanced programming skills (preferentially in python).
  • Readiness and enthusiasm to collaborate with the other team members and with experimental collaborators on interdisciplinary work in short timescales.
  • Curious and creative young researchers, with a strong motivation to shape the direction of the project.

Our offerings:

  • Challenging and varied tasks with a high level of personal responsibility
  • Team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • a friendly and collegial environment
  • employment at one of Germany's largest universities in the University Alliance Ruhr network

Additional information:

At the request of the applicant (m,f,x), the staff council may be involved in selection interviews. https://www.wpr.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.

German language courses are offered by the University Language Center (ZfA) in the field of German as a Foreign Language (DaF). https://www.zfa.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.

You can find the announcement and information on how to apply on the RUB portal: https://jobs.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/jobposting/dd9b554a3079102558889566c9da86981306d5e50?ref=homepage
