Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

PhD student positionin the field of simulation of solid state layer deposition

Reference code: 550097862_4 – 2023/WM 2
Commencement date: as soon as possible
Work location: Geesthacht
Application deadline: 26th June, 2023

The Solid State Materials Processing department of the Institute of Materials Mechanics, at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is looking for a PhD student, starting as soon as possible, initially limited to 3 years, within the ERC Consolidator Grant MA.D.AM “Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing”. The PhD position is mainly modelling oriented, focusing on the process and microstructure modelling of Solid State Layer Deposition (SSLD), i.e. Friction Surfacing Layer Deposition. Corresponding validation experiments will be performed within the department. The PhD student will not only focus on the process scale but also contribute to the development of a micromechanical model to describe the microstructure evolution during SSLD via a multi-phase-field approach.

Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.

Your tasks

  • execution and responsible handling of the research project funded by the European Union, i.e. the ERC Consolidator Grant MA.D.AM: Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing
  • process Modelling of SSLD to simulate temperature, material flow, residual stress and distortion during the deposition process
  • contribution to the development of a micromechanical model based on an integrated multi-phase-field, and crystal plasticity approach
  • establishing fundamental link between process characteristics and microstructure during SSLD
  • collaboration within an interdisciplinary team
  • publication of the results in scientific journals and presenting at conferences

Your profile

  • University degree in the field of computer science, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering or comparable (master's degree or equivalent)
  • ability to work scientifically, usually proven by an above-average degree
  • good knowledge in the field of computational mechanics or computational fluid dynamics
  • good programming skills, especially in C++, GPU programming (CUDA) would be advantageous
  • knowledge in different modelling techniques, such as the phase-field method or meshfree particle methods, is advantageous
  • knowledge of microstructural evolution in metals is advantageous
  • very good oral and written expression in English, German is advantageous
  • ability to work in a team and commitment to the work programme

We offer you

  • an exciting and varied job in a research centre with more than 1,100 employees from around 50 nations
  • a well connected research campus and best networking opportunities
  • individual opportunities for further training
  • social benefits according to the collective agreement of the public service and remuneration
  • an excellent technical infrastructure and modern workplace equipment
  • 6 weeks holiday per year and company holidays between Christmas and New Year's Day
  • very good compatibility private and professional life through offers of mobile and flexible work
  • PhD Buddy Program
  • family-friendly company policy with childcare facilities, e. g. nursery close to the company
  • free assistance program for employees (EAP)
  • corporate Benefits
  • a varied offer in the canteen on campus
  • possibility to enrol in the doctoral program (Dr.-Ing.) at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg

Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: Around 1,100 employees contribute to the tackling of climate change, the sustainable use of the world's coastal systems and the resource-compatible enhancement of the quality of life. From fundamental research to practical applications, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range.

Institute of Materials Mechanics

The Institute of Materials Mechanics focuses in innovative lightweight structures. Experiments, simulations, data-driven models and artificial intelligence are used to develop and investigate state-of-the-art process technologies, joining and modification methods. These technologies are applied in particular in automotive and aeronautical engineering.
