Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…
Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.
In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.
At the Institute of Materials Research some 200 scientists conduct research in the five sub-institutes "Materials Mechanics", "Materials Physics", "Materials Technology", "Magnesium Innovation Centre MagIC" and "Metallic Biomaterials".
PhD Student (m/w/d)
Reference code: 50012175_4
Commencement date: as soon as possible
For a PhD project at our institute of materials research offers a position – three years contract – for a PhD student (m/w/d) to work on a project in the border area between materials science and informatics.
The department metal physics investigates novel metallic and intermetallic lightweight materials by combining experiment, characterization and computer simulation. The topic of the proposed project is collection and processing of materials data published in literature, the development of a machine-learning model, which allows predicting the mechanical behaviour of TiAl based high temperature materials, and its validation by experiments. The research takes place at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht while the PhD thesis will be submitted and defended at Brandenburgisch Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg.
Your profile
You want to be part of a team with co-workers with different professional and cultural backgrounds and you are motivated and enthusiastic to tackle the challenges of an interdisciplinary and dynamic research topic.
You have a university degree in the field of natural science or engineering which qualifies you to earn a PhD degree at a German university. A sound background and knowledge in materials science, computational materials science, physics or informatics etc. is a prerequisite. Basic or extended knowledge in the other fields is highly appreciated. You should master English language sufficiently well to discuss scientific topics with international co-workers and to publish results in scientific journals without difficulty. Knowledge in programming, e.g. in Python and in the use of software libraries and toolkits for machine-learning and/or image processing, as for example Tensorflow and SciKit are especially valuable.
