Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

At the Institute of Materials Research some 200 scientists conduct research in the five sub-institutes "Materials Mechanics", "Materials Physics", "Materials Technology", "Magnesium Innovation Centre MagIC" and "Metallic Biomaterials".

PhD student (m/f/d) positions within ERC Consolidator Grant "Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing"

Reference code: 50058447_2 – 2021/WM 1
Commencement date: June 1st, 2021
The place of employment is Geesthacht (near Hamburg).

The Solid State Materials Processing department of the Institute of Materials Mechanics, at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is looking for three PhD students (m/f/d), possible starting date after June 1st, 2021, initially limited to 3 years, within the ERC Consolidator Grant "Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing". The first PhD position is experimental oriented with the focus to produce and process novel value-added Al-based materials with the friction extrusion process (FEP). The second PhD position is modelling oriented with a strong experimental component, focused on establishing a throughout thermodynamic description of the phase formations during the process. The third PhD position is mainly modelling oriented focusing on the development of a micromechanical model to describe the microstructure evolution during FEP.

Your tasks

  • execution and responsible handling of the research project funded by the European Union, i.e. the ERC Consolidator Grant "Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing".
  • fundamental understanding between phases/microstructure and processing variables
  • determination of composition-process-microstructure-property relationship for FEP
  • publication of the results in scientific journals and at conferences
  • PhD position 1: Experimental analysis and production of novel value-added materials (Al-based)
  • PhD position 1: Process/microstructural characterization, including the development of in-situ characterization facilities for friction extrusion process
  • PhD position 2: Development of thermodynamic databases and precipitation models using the CALPHAD method to describe the precipitation kinetics
  • PhD position 3: Development of a micromechanical model based on a multiphase-field and crystal plasticity approach to describe the microstructure evolution during FEP, including homogenization to describe the macroscopic behaviour

Your profile

  • University degree in the field of mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, computer science or comparable (master's degree or equivalent)
  • ability to work scientifically, usually proven by an above-average degree
  • good knowledge of microstructural evolution in metals, possibly in solid state processes
  • PhD position 1/3: Knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy
  • PhD position 2/3: Knowledge in the field of thermodynamic modelling
  • PhD position 3/3: Knowledge in the field of computational mechanics
  • abilities in the analytical and/or experimental characterization of metallic materials are advantageous
  • knowledge of precipitation and recrystallization processes in aluminium alloys is advantageous
  • very good oral and written expression in English, German is advantageous
  • ability to work in a team and commitment to the work programme

We offer you

  • multinational work environment with over 1,000 colleagues from more than 50 nations
  • extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses or leadership seminars)
  • flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
  • excellent infrastructure, including a scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
  • remuneration according to the standards of the collective wage agreement TV-AVH including further social benefits
  • possibility to enrol in the doctoral program (Dr.-Ing., Dr. rer. nat.) at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg

Please indicate clearly in your application for which of the three PhD positions you are applying!

The promotion of equal rights is a matter of course for us. Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Interested? Then we are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive application documents (cover letter, CV, transcripts, certificates etc.) indicating the reference number 2021/WM 1.

Please start the online application process for this offered position via http://www.hzg.de category Career & Campus.
