Phd student (m/f/d) in the field of materials science, physics, mechanical engineering or similar

Salary group E13 TVöD
Temporary contract for 36 months
Full-time / suitable as part-time employment

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Processing of work packages of the DFG project Cryst-Morph (characterization of ceramic materials for diesel particulate filters) with the aim of a doctorate
  • Performing measurements with laboratory X-ray sources and synchrotron radiation sources BESSY II (BAMline): spatially resolved X-ray refraction and diffraction, computed tomography 
  • Performance of electron microscopic measurements (SEM, TEM)
  • Further development of existing measurement equipment (X-ray diffraction) 
  • Quantitative data evaluation and consolidation of the results of all methods
  • Collaboration with national and international project partners, proactive cooperation with colleagues inside and outside BAM 
  • Written and oral scientific communication (participation in conferences, writing reports and scientific publications, documentation of project results, writing a dissertation)
  • Supervision of students

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies in the field of physics, materials science, mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • Sound experience in the application of X-ray techniques (diffraction and imaging) through experiments and their evaluation, as well as conception and adaptation of experimental apparatuses
  • Basic knowledge in programming, software skills (image processing and analysis)
  • Very good English and German language skills, both written and spoken
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
