Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We look forward to receiving your application! The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university’s largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling. Your work assignments

The student will learn using first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate phase stability and mechanical properties of metal and ceramic alloys at conditions of temperature and stress of relevance for practical and industrial uses. The student will also learn using machine-learning methods to develop interatomic potentials that allow fast and accurate simulations of materials properties.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in physics or adjacent fields or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in physics and materials science with a focus on theory. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Particular merit is previous experience of ab-initio calculations and molecular dynamics simulations of materials at finite temperatures and the use of machine learning algorithms. Eligible for employment as a doctoral student is only those who are admitted or have already been admitted to postgraduate education.

It is beneficial that the applicant attaches a letter of intent to the application. The letter should contain brief description on scientific background and interests, experience (if any) in theoretical modeling and calculations, along with reasons for applying.

Your workplace

The project will be carried out within the strong Theoretical Physics Division, in close collaboration with experimentalists at the IFM department and industrial partners of the Vinnova FunMat-II competence center. The Division of Theoretical Physics carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within the Department of Physics Chemistry and Biology (IFM) at Linköping University.
