A PhD scholarship is available at the University of Queensland (UQ), School of Mathematics and Physics. The project will be focused on first-principles calculations of atomic defects in solids for quantum technologies using a combination of density-functional theory, many-body perturbation theory and machine learning techniques. The student will be supervised by Dr. Carla Verdi, in close collaboration with Prof. Catherine Stampfl at the University of Sydney.
The scholarship includes tuition fees and is open to both domestic and international students. The preferred commencement date is 1 October 2023, and no later than 1 January 2024.

Requirements:
-Bachelor's degree with Honours or Master's degree in Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline.
-Background in condensed matter, materials science or a related field, ideally with experience in computational research.
-Good written and oral communication skills. Note that international students must generally meet UQ's minimum English language requirements (overall IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent).
-Previous experience in ab initio materials modelling is highly desirable.
