The Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, invites applications for a doctoral candidate / postdoctoral position (m / f) to investigate the mechanical properties of lamellar microstructures in TiAl with atomistic simulation methods. The position is third-party funded and comprises 39.83 hours/week for three years for a PhD candidate or 39.83 hours/week for two years for a postdoctoral researcher. The project is associated with ongoing research activities in the Mechanical Properties of Interfaces group of Dr. Rebecca Janisch, which is part of the department Micromechanical and Macroscopic Modeling (Prof. Alexander Hartmaier). For more details on our research activities please refer to http://www.icams.de

The macroscopic mechanical behavior of modern structural materials with a hierarchical microstructure is determined by interdependent deformation mechanisms on different length-scales. The range of validity of empirical laws and the way in which the individual microstructural parameters contribute to it, are of major importance for formulating quantitative multiscale models of deformation and fracture, and will be clarified in this project via large-scale molecular dynamics simulations.

The candidate must hold a degree in physics, chemistry, material science, or a related field. He or she should have profound knowledge in materials physics and mechanics, as well as comprehensive experience in atomistic simulation methods. Adequate language skills for writing publications and research proposals in English are expected, as well as programming skills and proficiency in working with the Linux operating system.

At Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we particularly want to promote the careers of women in the areas in which they are underrepresented, and we are therefore very pleased to receive applications of women. The applications of suitably qualified handicapped persons or of persons of equal legal status are also welcome.

We are looking forward to your application including your CV, publication list, a statement of research interests, and the contact details of at least two referees.

Please send your documents to r[email protected] . The application deadline is September 17th, 2018.
