Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive and interdisciplinary profile fields in research and teaching. The Chair of Theoretical Physics VII has the following vacancy:
One PhD position (m/f/d) in the Computational Design of Energy Materials as part of an International Research and Training Group with Monash University and Melbourne University, Australia

The project

In the framework of the International Research and Training Group "OptExc" (project area 4) researchers from Bayreuth and Melbourne will work on the design, evaluation, and synthesis of materials with controlled optoelectronic anisotropies for use in novel back-contacted solar cell architectures. The Chair of Theoretical Physics VII will thereby, focus on first principles computations of the materials' properties, and the prediction of novel materials using machine-learned surrogate models. Training data will thereby be gathered both from theory and high-throughput synthesis experiments undertaken by OptExc collaborators.

Your profile

We are looking for excellent, highly motivated early-career researchers to join our research team. Candidate should have a master's degree in physics or theoretical chemistry with a background in density functional theory preferably beyond standard ground state calculations, charge transport theory, and materials design. A further background in machine learning techniques would be preferred.

Basic programming skills (Python or Fortran), and first acquaintance with the Linux OS are welcome. Fluency in English is expected.

For a dual PhD degree (see below), candidates additionally need to fulfill the admission requirements of Monash University, which include a first class honours degree and a TOEFL or IELTS certificate.

Our offer

We offer excellent working conditions in a newly established international team at the University of Bayreuth. The position will be open from the 1st of September 2023.

The salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the University of Bayreuth for PhD students. The salary is based on the Bavarian public salary scale TV-L E13 (75%). Successful candidates will work in an international group focusing on computational materials design (http://www.oberhofer.physik.uni-bayreuth.de). As part of the OptExc graduate program, PhD students are expected to spend at least 6 (non-continuous) months at the partner Universities in Melbourne, additional funds for the stay abroad will be provided. In case the successful candidate fulfills the admissions requirements of Monash University, they will also have the opportunity to partake in a dual degree program, where the PhD title will be awarded by both Monash/Melbourne University and the University of Bayreuth. In this case the length of the required stay in Australia rises to 12 months.

The University of Bayreuth values the diversity of its employees and is explicitly committed to the goal of gender equality. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
