The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Michigan invites applications to its PhD program in all areas of experimental and theoretical materials research for enrollment during the Fall 2021 semester.

 

The University of Michigan MSE Department is one of the established and largest programs in the USA. We offer a comprehensive, well-rounded education in one of the most technically diverse fields. Students admitted to the program come from diverse technical backgrounds in science and engineering. We attract high levels of research funding and host a wide range of state-of-the-art research facilities for advanced materials research. Our internationally recognized faculty work in areas ranging from organic electronics to biomaterials to metallurgy and ceramics, and they prepare the next generation of material scientists and engineers for successful careers in academia and industry. Students can pursue joint degrees and certificates in areas such as scientific computing, data science, entrepreneurship, science policy, and diversity, equity, and inclusion, among others.

 

Students receive full financial support guaranteed for four years (if coming in with a Master’s degree) or five years (if coming in with a Bachelors degree) that includes a tuition/fee waiver, a monthly stipend of $2,722, health and dental insurance, including benefits to students with dependents.

 

The University of Michigan is home to an inclusive, diverse, international, and collegial student and faculty body. The city of Ann Arbor – also known as “Tree Town” for its numerous parks and green spaces – is small and welcoming for making friends easily yet large enough to offer international cultural opportunities like music, theatre, and art in a safe, walkable downtown with hundreds of shops and restaurants.

Applications are evaluated holistically based on all the presented credentials (academic qualifications, skills, and experiences) for potential of success in the PhD program.
