Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Several fully funded Ph.D. positions are available in the Materials Theory, Informatics, and Design group in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF). The group, led by Prof. Liping Yu, focuses on the computational and rational design of novel materials for energy storage and conversion (e.g., solar cells, batteries, supercapacitors, catalysts) and next-generation electronics (e.g., flexible electronics, transparent conductors, memories). The group specializes in first-principles studies of a broad range of material classes, including high-entropy materials, 2D nanomaterials, nanocomposites, and interface/surface materials. The research involves subjects such as semiconductor physics, phase transitions, materials thermodynamics, and the development of advanced machine-learning methods for predicting materials properties, among others.

Students with a BS or MS degree in physics, applied physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field are welcome to apply. Knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, as well as experience with DFT calculations and scientific programming in Python (or other languages), is highly desired.  Effective teamwork and strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

The GRE is not required.  The application fee will be waived if apply by November 1st, 2023.

Interested students, please apply by December 1, 2023, through the following link:

About the University, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and Department of Materials Science and Engineering:

Founded in 1963 to fuel the region’s talent pipeline and support the growing U.S. space program, UCF is built to make a better future for our students and society. It’s one of the reasons U.S. News & World Report ranks UCF among the nation’s top 20 most innovative colleges, while Forbes, Kiplinger, and The Princeton Review rank us a best-value university. UCF is one of 14 universities nationwide designated as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a Research 1 university. With 13 colleges, including a fully accredited College of Medicine, UCF offers more than 220-degree programs between its main campus, downtown campus, hospitality campus, academic health sciences campus, and 11 UCF Connect centers located throughout the region.

The UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science is among the nation's largest producers of engineering and technology workforce talent and we are the No. 1 provider of graduates to the defense and aerospace industries. We have more than 40 degree and certificate programs within the college and are continuing to grow. Our students, faculty, and alumni address society's greatest challenges and aspirations in aerospace, computing, energy, the environment, healthcare, transportation, and more. Our education and research efforts are supported by a strong neighboring industry presence such as L3Harris Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Duke Energy, Siemens, Walt Disney World, and NASA, to name a few.

UCF is ranked the No. 51 best graduate school for materials science and engineering education in the US, and the No. 32 best graduate school for materials science and engineering education among US public schools.  Details on other UCF rankings can be found at https://www.ucf.edu/academics/us-news-rankings/.
