Job announcements relevant to people interested in electronic structure calculations…

Due to the large number of posts recently, there is currently a delay of several weeks between posts being submitted and the corresponding emails being distributed to all users. Please bear with us while we try to improve this. In the meantime – and until this notice is removed – it would assist us considerably if you could submit only important and/or urgent posts and thus help to reduce the size of the mail queue. Under no circumstances should you resend posts multiple times when you find the emails are not distributed immediately.

In light of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, we request that announcements relating to events, jobs and other activities associated with institutions supported by the Russian and Belarusian states are not posted to the Psi-k forum.

Context:

We are looking for highly motivated individuals to join as PhD researchers the ERC "ARTISTIC" project team lead by Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (https://www.u-picardie.fr/erc-artistic/). The general goal of the ARTISTIC project is the development of a multiscale modelling platform that rationalizes the formulation and manufacturing process of Li-ion battery (LIB) composite electrodes and the effect of the variables of each step of the manufacturing process in the architecture and electrochemical behavior of the electrodes. A predictive open access computational platform is being developed through the combination of discrete particle and continuum mathematical models within a workflow that integrates the individual models and mimics the different steps along the electrode fabrication process, including the slurry preparation, electrode film drying and calendering. This platform is supported by experimental characterizations and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

Your mission:

You will be in charge of developing innovative simulation tools encompassing physical models and AI techniques. You will be in charge of using them to study phenomena involved in the manufacturing and electrochemical behavior of the LIB electrodes, and confronting the results with experimental data.

Your qualifications:

- Excellent master degree in physics, electrochemical engineering, mathematics, data science or similar disciplines;

- Programming experience in Python, C/C++ or Matlab, or at using computational programs such as LAMMPS or GROMACS;

- Open-minded, dynamic, team player, strong motivation.

Work environment:

Prof. Alejandro A. Franco's ERC "ARTISTIC" project team is hosted by the Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (LRCS). LRCS was founded in 1968 and is a mixed research unit of CNRS and Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France). LRCS employs more than 100 people representing more than 20 nationalities.

LRCS has a strong expertise on rechargeable battery technologies (lithium-ion batteries, lithium-air, sodium-ion, lithium sulfur, all-solid state batteries, redox flow batteries…) supported on deep expertise on materials synthesis and characterization, electrochemistry and multiscale computational techniques.

Additionally, LRCS is  strongly involved in partnership-oriented research and interdisciplinarity, in particular in the context of the ALISTORE European Research Institute (involving more than 10 countries and 20 laboratories) and at the French level through the RS2E network which gathers 17 laboratories, 15 industrial partners and 3 public institutions engaging in rechargeable batteries and supercacitors research. RS2E and Alistore-ERI were both founded by the lab’s former director, Prof. Jean-Marie Tarascon.

A leading-edge fundamental research lab, LRCS also seeks to facilitate technology transfer to the industry through RS2E’s pre-transfer equipment (18650 batteries prototyping, safety, upscaling). LRCS is also working closely with companies (Renault, EDF, Solvay, Safran, Umicore…) to give its findings a chance to reach the market and hopefully… your daily life!

Your benefits:

- Work in a project of scientific excellence, funded by the European Research Council (ERC);

- Unique computational and experimental facilities specialized in the battery field;

- Highly dynamic and international woking atmosphere, appreciating your work and supporting your professional development;

- Lively and picturesque city (http://www.visit-amiens.com/accueil).

Application modalities:

Please send your CV together with a motivation letter, master transcripts and 2 recommendation letters to Prof. Alejandro A. Franco ([email protected]). Deadline for applications is on January 31, 2020. PhD positions are to start as soon as possible.
