The Department of Chemistry at University of Jyväskylä, Finland is seeking doctoral researchers and offers fully funded positions for four years to complete PhD in chemistry.

We are pleased to offer supervision for PhD candidates, whose research interests lie in our area of expertise in computational heterogeneous (electro)catalysis. As discussed here, the applicant should write a short research plan. Possible research themes are given below and we can aid in writing a research plan with most promising applicants. The research topics include but are not limited to

  • Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived species and CO2 to value-added molecules.
  • Exploration of heterogeneous interfaces for (electro)catalytic reactions
  • Computational electrocatalysis/electrochemistry
  • Method development projects related to the above topics.

For more information on recent research interests in the group, please refer to the  Google Scholar profiles: Honkala & Melander.

The eligible candidate should

  • have or about to have a degree in the suitable field of chemistry, physics, materials science, or engineering.
  • have previous experience on computational chemistry/physics, preferably on DFT calculations.
  • have proficient English language skills, both oral and written.
  • enjoy teamwork and have good communication skills

Previous experience on modelling heterogenous (electro)catalysis, programming, or knowledge on a high-performance computing environment are considered as advantage, but not mandatory.

The tasks of a doctoral researcher focus on research aiming at the completion of a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other related tasks to these. We are an international team of ~15 people and offer possibility to do cutting-edge research in computational and theoretical chemistry with good computational resources.  We collaborate with different experimental and computational research groups in Finland and abroad.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Prof. Karoliina Honkala ([email protected]) and Adj. Prof. Marko Melander ([email protected]) for further details and discussing a precise topic of the PhD thesis. General information about the open positions, deadline for applications, and link to the online application can be found from here .
