PhD studentship in Condensed Matter Physics in partnership with the University of Manchester and Queen's University Belfast

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship (EPSRC funded) to work in the forefront of 2D Materials and Their vdW Heterostructures for the Next Generation of Energy Efficient Devices. Several applications on electronics, biology and nanotechnology are envisioned.

The PhD studentship is part of a close collaboration between the group led by Dr. Elton Santos at the School of Mathematics and Physics at Queen's University Belfast, and the group of Prof. Sir Kostya Novoselov, FRS (Nobel Laureate) at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester.

The student will be working in a collaborative environment where experiments and theory will be combined to advance the science and applications of energy materials and 2D-heterostructures. Several long visits to Manchester will be an essential part of the project, where experiments will be performed at world-class facilities at the National Graphene Institute (http://www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk).

In particular, this project will investigate the chemical and physical properties of 2D compounds broadly defined (e.g. oxides, BN, graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, etc). A combination of material synthesis and advanced characterization tools will be used to understand the basic physics of these novel materials and evaluate their suitability for electronic and optical applications. Simulations at different levels of theory, ranging from numerical over multi-scale approaches will be utilized.

The applicants should have a university degree in physics, chemistry or equivalent (minimum entry 2:1). Imaginative, highly motivated candidates with a feeling for curiosity-driven discoveries are encouraged to apply. The position is available immediately, and the start date is negotiable.

Applicants with British citizenship or have been residents in the UK for 3 years are invited to apply (fully funded). For EU candidates, fees can be paid from the studentship even though additional resources for the stipend should be brought from their home country. International students (non EU or UK) should bring their own funding resources.

How to apply

Interested applicants should complete an online application form, available from the following website at https://dap.qub.ac.uk/portal/user/u_login.php, providing an up-to-date CV, a letter of motivation, and the names and contact details of at least two academic referees.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Prof. Kostya Novoselov ([email protected]) or Dr. Elton Santos ([email protected]).

Closing date: August 30st 2017 or till position is filled.
