The University of Duisburg-Essen invites applications for a  Ph.D. position (Salary scale 75% of 13 TV-L) at the Faculty of Physics, located on the Duisburg Campus.

The PhD project will be part of the new CRC "Non-equilibrium dynamics of condensed matter in the time domain" https://www.uni-due.de/sfb1242/ . The applicant will work in the Theoretical Physics Departments within subproject B2 „ab initio description of electronic excitation and relaxation dynamics“ https://www.uni-due.de/sfb1242/overview_b2.php

Main research topics and duties:

It is the task of this PhD project to perform simulations of non-linear photoemission using time-dependent density functional theory. For this purpose, a DFT code should be suitably extended, and the action of strong laser fields on both clean and adsorbated-covered silver surfaces will be simulated. The goal is to obtain a better understanding of the electronic structure of the interface between a metal contact and a layer of an organic semiconductor such as pentacene.

Acquired skills:

The PhD student will acquire soft skills in participating in the Integrated Research Training Group. https://www.uni-due.de/sfb1242/irtg.php  She/he will get familiar with advanced quantum-mechanical simulation methods of electronic structure. This includes access to supercomputers with thousands of CPU cores. Moreover, he or she will prove his/her expertise in programming techniques, including parallel programming tools such as MPI.

Qualifications required:

Master or comparable degree (8 semesters of studies) in Physics with a focus on computational physics or materials physics. Acquaintance with computers running under Unix/Linux, good programming skills in Fortran or C. Knowledge in numerical techniques for the theoretical description of electronic excitations (e.g. TDDFT) is an advantage.

The University of Duisburg-Essen aims to promote the diversity of its members. http://www.uni-due.de/diversity It is seeking to increase the number of women on its scientific staff and therefore strongly encourages suitably qualified women to apply. In case of equal qualification, women will be given preference in accordance with state equal opportunity legislation. Applications from suitable handicapped persons and equivalent applicants according to Article 2, Paragraph 3 of the social code (SGB IX) are also welcome.

Your application should contain: curriculum vitae, copies of your university certificates, list of publications, copies of your three most relevant publications. Send your application to: Professor Peter Kratzer, Fakultät für Physik, Universität Duisburg–Essen, Lotharstraße 1, D-47048 Duisburg, Germany, or as e–mail to [email protected]
